Get ready for a game-changer in London's public transport scene! The launch of the Superloop SL11 bus route is set to revolutionize travel in the city's outer regions. But here's where it gets controversial: this new service is being hailed as a 'stopgap' measure while a more permanent solution, the DLR extension, is under construction.
Mayor Sadiq Khan has made it clear that City Hall isn't willing to wait for the DLR extension to improve public transport access. "We're expanding the Superloop express bus network with the SL12 and exploring the SL13 to enhance public transport, especially in outer London," he explained.
The SL11 is a key part of this strategy, replacing the daytime 472 route and offering more frequent services. It's a bold move, especially considering the ongoing regeneration projects in Thamesmead, where 15,000 new homes are being built.
And this is the part most people miss: the SL11 is about more than just convenience. It's about transforming an underserved part of London, boosting transport links, and supporting early regeneration plans. Khan adds, "Replacing the 472 with this faster, more direct service will help to support early regeneration plans in Thamesmead and boost transport links in a historically under-served part of London."
To sweeten the deal, TfL is offering a week of free travel on the new Superloop service, starting January 24th. So, Londoners, mark your calendars and give the SL11 a try!
Lorna Murphy, TfL's Director of Buses, is thrilled about the new service, highlighting the improved travel times and connections it will bring. "All bus rides on the SL11 will be free for customers for the first week, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of this offer."
But there's a catch: passengers who used stops on the old 472 route may need to change buses. And further Superloop routes are still in the consultation phase, with plans for east, west, and south London.
So, what do you think? Is the Superloop SL11 a brilliant temporary solution or a missed opportunity? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
