Beneath the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, a single honey fungus has been silently spreading through the forest for millennia, now covering nearly 10 square kilometers. This organism, known as Armillaria ostoyae, is one of the strongest contenders for the largest living thing on Earth, but it's a title that sparks debate. The story of its discovery and the ongoing debate about its size and age is a fascinating journey into the heart of nature's mysteries.
A Hidden Giant
Most of this fungus remains hidden underground, existing as a network of fine threads called mycelium that spreads through soil and wood. It also forms rhizomorphs, tougher root-like strands that allow it to travel from one tree root to the next, advancing through the forest floor. This honey fungus feeds by killing trees, leaving behind a map of its progress in the form of scattered dead and dying trees.
The discovery of this massive organism began in 1988 when a Forest Service worker, Greg Whipple, spotted signs of the fungus in the Malheur National Forest. He estimated its extent at around 400 acres, but this was a significant underestimate. It took genetic analysis to prove that the entire patch was a single organism. Researchers collected samples and tested their genetic makeup, finding that the largest genet, labeled Genet D, spanned about 2,385 acres, or 9.6 square kilometers. This made it genetically distinct from neighboring Armillaria individuals.
However, the Oregon Encyclopedia reveals that this famous patch is just one of several separate, genetically distinct patches of the same species in that part of the Malheur. What sets it apart is that this single patch is all part of a single organism, a remarkable feat of nature.
Age and Size Uncertainty
Determining the age of this fungus is a challenging task. While it's estimated to be between 1,900 and 8,650 years old, these figures are rough estimates rather than precise dates. The spread rate of Armillaria, between 20 centimeters and a meter per year, is used to calculate its age, but growth is not steady, making the range genuinely uncertain. Similarly, estimating its weight is difficult due to the fungus's size and the extrapolations required from infected soil and wood.
The Title of Largest Living Organism
The headlines often claim that this fungus is the largest living organism on Earth, but this is a contentious statement. The ranking of living organisms depends on how they are measured. For instance, a single seagrass clone in Shark Bay, Western Australia, covers around 200 square kilometers, while a quaking aspen clone in Utah, known as Pando, is estimated at around 6,000 tonnes and is often described as the heaviest known organism. The Oregon fungus remains a strong contender by area but may not be the heaviest.
The debate over what constitutes a single organism adds to the complexity. The case for the fungus, seagrass, and aspen is that each is a single genet, a set of genetically identical cells physically connected and spreading through cloning. If this definition is accepted, all three qualify as single individuals of extraordinary size.
